Welcome to my Blog!

Here you'll find new reviews every week of restaurants around the Main Line and Philadelphia. I am in search of restaurants with locally grown, organic food, and vegetarian options. There has been a surge of interest in organic and local farming and dining recently in the Philadelphia area. In September of 2010, I had the opportunity to see a pre-screening of the documentary 'Forks Over Knives' and the movie made such a profound impact on me, I have been vegetarian ever since. Finally we are becoming more conscious of where our food comes from. I know that there are restaurants and cafes out there that seek out local, organic, and sustainable farming, and I plan on visiting all of them, one at a time!

TEIKOKU in Newtown Square

Recommended by many friends, I finally made the trip to Teikoku, which is right around the corner from me. I can't believe I haven't been here before. Surprisingly, for a Japanese/Thai place, their menu is not very heavy with the vegetarian fare, but it didn't matter.  Originally a barn, and using Feng shui and Zen principles in design, the vibe of Teikoku is one of tranquility and serenity. We sat at the mahogany bar while we waited for the rest of our party to arrive. The bar and main dining area were dimly lit, and very cozy. The atmosphere was relaxed casual, but also retro chic.
There is even a sushi bar you can sit at. We were seated in a brightly lit room off to the side of the main room. In the fashion of a traditional Japanese dining room, there was a low table and the legless "chairs" were elevated so the waitress had to step up to serve us and we had to step down and slide over to get out. Some of our party had a little too much fun rolling in and out of our seats. At first glance, the menu had a few vegetarian choices. There was a Tofu Miso Soup and there were a few salads to choose from, but I was looking for something a little more substantial. For a starter, I ordered the Vegetable House Roll- Avocado, carrot, asparagus, cucumber.  These were light and tasty. I found myself sharing these I had so many. $4 for about six nice sized spring rolls.  I confess, I was worried that there would be nothing here for me to eat before I came. The pride and joy of Teikoku is their fresh sushi, which isn't usually part of my diet, and many of the items have some kind of meat or fish. As it turns out, the Green Curry Vegetable fried rice-Stir fried rice, mixed vegetables in a Cognac Green Curry Sauce was a wonderful choice. I like a lot of  vegetables, so I did ask the waitress to add some broccoli to the dish. It was a good decision. The dish of green curry came on the side, and had a nice spicy kick to it. I didn't think I would use it all but I did. The portions were good, and it was quite good, though I should have asked for them to add some tofu, or more vegetables. Since everyone else was ordering dessert, I had to indulge too, and I am glad I did. My big splurge was the Teikoku soufflĂ© -Chocolate soufflĂ© with warm chocolate ganache, anglaise sauce and fig gelato. Just as I had hoped, it was a chocolate delight, very similar to a chocolate lava cake, complete with ice cream. And only for $10.
There was a group of six of us there that night. With starters, a main entree, and dessert for each of us, we got out of there for $100 per couple, and that was over tipping. We stayed for two and a half hours, because we didn't want to leave. It was a perfect choice. I wish they had more vegetable choices, but for the meal I got, and for that price, I certainly can't complain. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. The food was terrific and fresh. I will most certainly be back! I think I'd go every week if they had just a couple of more vegetarian meals!
